30/04/2008 - Healthy Horizons Project
The Healthy Horizons Project is delivered in partnership with the Durham and Chester-le-Street Lifestyle Initiative and Age Concern County Durham, and is funded through County Durham Primary Care Trust.
In keeping with the Project's aim to encourage people over the age of 50 to take up more physical activity to improve their quality of life, health and wellbeing. A physical activity and wellbeing open day was held on Tuesday 25 March at Abbey Leisure Centre. The event was well attended, with 49 people present. Throughout the day there was the chance to try a wealth of activities including yoga, tai chi, pilates, seated exercise, circuits, keep fit, salsa and line dancing.
Talks and information were provided on healthy eating, diabetes, guided walks, Age Concern's services, MIND Counselling Services and smoking cessation. There were also opportunities for people to have their weight and body mass index (BMI) measurements checked.
A free buffet lunch and refreshments were provided and a fun day was had by all! Here are just a few of the comments made by those who attended:
"The full day was first class, I look forward to doing it all again."
"I was made very welcome and received excellent instruction from the instructors."
"Really pleased I came, it was great fun to keep fit."
"Excellent, I really enjoyed the salsa."
"A comprehensive programme covers all suitable activities for the targeted age group."
"The whole day was perfect, there was not enough hours in the day. I would have liked to have done more."
"An excellent day, well organised and supported by dedicated staff."
Following the success of the Open Day a similar event will be held later in the year, but if you can't wait that long Healthy Horizons delivers over 20 weekly activities across two districts (circuits, yoga, tai chi, seated exercise, keep fit and aqua aerobics).
