The Durham and Chester-le-Street Lifestyle Initiative, supported by the Primary Care Trust, and aided by the Footsteps to Fitness walk volunteers have created a series of health walks designed to increase the level of physical activity in the local community.

The aim of Active Durham is to bring together the public, private, voluntary and community sectors, to provide a co-ordinated approach to the delivery of sport and active leisure, to increase participation levels and to contribute towards broader social policy and community outcomes at a local level. This will be launched with a year of exercise, sport and physical activity commencing in August 2008.

Expert advice is at hand for parents in Durham and Chester-le-Street looking to raise healthy, happy kids. Youngsters in the area are set to benefit from the FREE MEND (Mind Exercise Nutrition....Do it!) programme. The MEND scheme is specially designed to help kids who are overweight for their age, using fun hands-on activities and games to encourage them to eat well and exercise regularly.
Youngsters aged 7 -13 and their parents can apply to join the programmes completely free of charge by calling 0191 389 0986 or by registering online at the MEND website www.mendprogramme.org
