30/04/2008 - Community Network
There was a great turnout at the recent Community Network AGM where local people had a chance to hear some of the proposals for the Unitary Authority. Following the presentations, Craig Morgan, Gerald Tomkins and Joy Brindle from the Local Government Review Working Group were presented with questions from members of the voluntary and community sector regarding the new arrangements for community involvement.
As the proposals for the new structure are still in the early stages, not all of the questions could be answered and a number of concerns and suggestions were put forward for the working group to consider. Furthermore, the network recognises the need to be proactive in ensuring that the current forms of local input into council policies and strategies are not lost and that local people are involved in shaping the new arrangements. As a result the Network will be carrying out some consultations with communities to find out the issues affecting them and the best ways of involving them in the decision-making process. Watch out for more information in the coming months.
If you would like to have your say, join the Network and help strengthen the voice of local communities. Details of how to become involved are below.
David Bottoms has stood down as chair of the Community Network and John Hepplewhite takes over for the next three years. David has been key in strengthening the Network over the last two years and the committee wish him well in his new endeavours. Two new community reps have joined the committee, Janet Blackburn from Bowburn and John Booth from Ushaw Moor, both of whom are very capable of representing the views of the community on the Durham District Partnership.
Below are the contact details of the community representatives on the DDP. If you or your group have any issues you would like highlighting at the Partnership do not hesitate to contact one of the reps, or Mary Foy at the CVS.
